AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin mother who left her 10-month-old daughter in a hot car last year was sentenced to two years probation earlier this month.
Police said 28-year-old Debra Ary left her baby in the car last August with the windows up and doors locked. The car was parked in the parking lot of the H-E-B on E. 51st Street.
Surveillance cameras showed the child was in the car for 26 minutes before security broke the window and took the child out. The temperature that day was 103°.
A woman who helped pull the girl out of the car said the child’s body was so hot “it felt like she had been in an oven.” The child was treated for an elevated temperature.
Ary was originally charged with endangering a child, but on Aug. 11 she pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempt to abandon/endanger a child, which is a misdemeanor. She was placed on community supervision for two years and she will have to take parenting classes.
