‘Tiny houses’ will make up Austin’s new homeless community

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A 27-acre master planned community will boast the cheapest housing in Austin and it’s all geared toward the chronically homeless.

Community First Village will house 225 people at the location off Hog Eye Road in East Travis County. It  When complete it will feature a medical facility, a workshop with loaner tools and resources to help with education and job placement.

Overseen by Mobile Loaves & Fishes, the community will feature housing made up of canvas-sided cottages, micro-houses and 5th wheel RV’s.

Commissioners approved the site about a year ago amid concern from neighbors. Community organizers say they those fears have proven to be unjustified in similar communities across the country.
