Construction crew ruptures Rollingwood gas line

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Austin fire crews are out working to get a ruptured gas line in Rollingwood under control. The six-inch gas line is at Riley Road and Pickwick Lane, just outside of the city limits in the south. Crews from ESD 9 have responded.

Dispatchers routed the Austin Fire Department out there when the gas line broke, and firefighters then called Texas Gas Service crews to help out. Texas Gas Service spokeswoman Christy Penders says a construction crew was digging in the middle of the street and hit the gas line, breaking it. Texas Gas Service crews are trying to find a shutoff valve.

In the meantime, they are warning drivers to avoid the area. AFD Capt. Matt Cox says there have been no injuries, but they did have to evacuate a few homes in the area as a safety precaution. Crews are working to fix the problem and hope to have the gas off within the hour or sooner. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
