Austin students receive free school supplies

AUSTIN (KXAN) — As students get ready to return to class, Austin police and the City Parks and Recreation Department hosted a back to school bash Saturday at the Dove Springs Recreation Center in Southeast Austin.

Volunteers handed out free school supplies to families who might not be able to afford them.

“It’s so inspiring,” said George Morales, President of the Dove Springs Recreation Advisory Board. “You see a kid… especially the parents… they might need a little bit of help, extra help, just to get them started off… and when those kids get those backpacks, the smiles on their faces makes this effort worthwhile.”

Organizers say they planned three months for this, and they expected around 500 children to receive the supplies.
