SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A man was sentenced to life in prison Thursday after a jury found him guilty of beating and stabbing his girlfriend with a box cutter.
It took a Hays County jury 20 minutes the day before to convict 30-year-old Zane Lynn Barton of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon. The district attorney’s office said in a press release that Barton relentlessly beat the woman with the buckle end of a belt and also hit her in the face and head with rocks. He was arrested following a May 16, 2013, incident near a San Marcos Walmart after police say he slit the woman’s throat with a box cutter after cutting ‘X’s’ into her face and hands.
The woman, who managed to survive the attack, described to the jury what she felt before passing out. A doctor testified that the woman would have died if the cuts were one or two millimeters off, according to the release.
The woman later convinced Barton to let her leave their camp and get medical attention after promising to say a stranger attacked her, the release said. Once she was returned to her family, the victim called police saying Barton attacked her, it said.
