Texas firefighters battle fire near chemical plant

ELMENDORF, Texas (AP) — Firefighters have been battling a major brush fire near a Bexar County chemical plant. Eleven agencies responded to the fire that started around 5 p.m. Sunday. Officials say 80-100 acres burned, including several unoccupied structures.

Bexar County spokeswoman Laura Jesse tells KSAT-TV that authorities worked to keep the flames away from the Brenntag chemical facility southeast of San Antonio. Fire crews set controlled burns near the facility to clear away dry vegetation.

Jesse says the facility housed oxidizers used to clean fracking equipment and wells. She says the cause of the fire is undetermined. A man on the property tells authorities he had been setting off Roman candle fireworks.
