Deadly crash on E. 7th (Chris Nelson/KXAN)

AUSTIN (KXAN) – A man in his 20s died early Friday morning in a crash between a motorcycle and a pickup truck, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.

The wreck happened just before 4 a.m. at the intersection of east Seventh Street and Pedernales Street. The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics took the driver of the pickup truck to University Medical Center Brackenridge with non-life-threatening injuries.

A police officer reports seeing the motorcycle rider speeding closer to downtown Austin and running a red light. The officer followed, and came upon the crash.

Investigators said it appears the motorcyclist ran the red light and crashed into the pickup truck. The driver of the pickup truck is being charged with DWI although authorities say they don’t believe he caused the accident. A helmet for the motorcyclist was found near the scene, but it’s not clear if he was wearing it.

Four blocks of East Seventh Street, around Pedernales Street, were closed for three hours as the investigation continued. Officers put detours in place to guide cars around the intersection. The road reopened just before 7 a.m. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
