Giant inflatable sea turtle floats in Sydney Harbor

SYDNEY (NBC/APTN) — It’s one of the most picturesque harbors in the world, but Friday it was a little more unique. Tourists and residents of Sydney got a morning surprise Friday: a giant inflatable turtle floating in Sydney Harbor.

At more than 16 feet tall and almost 50 feet long, the giant floating turtle set sail to celebrate the opening of an undersea exhibit at the city’s aquarium. Dubbed “Alphie,” the turtle is painted with an abstract black-and-white pattern of a coral reef — aimed to inspire people to think about the health of Australia’s famed Great Barrier Reef. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
