Fire Safety with the Austin Fire Department

Captain Josh Portie joined us in the studio Friday to share simple tips on preventing wildfires and protecting your home from fire damage. Many people think about wildfires as massive events you see on the news, but they can often begin from a small source like a lit cigarette thrown from a vehicle or even a dragging chain on a vehicle that sets off loose sparks.

There are also simple ways to prevent wildfires from spreading to your house. Use basic tools like a rake or broom to clear debris from patios, decks and the perimeter of your home. Be sure to focus on areas where you use a grill. You can also keep a shovel and bucket of water on hand when you grill out to extinguish any hot coals or embers that may escape. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
