AUSTIN (KXAN) — Police arrested three people following a fiery crash in Southeast Austin.
Officers said they were tracking the three after they allegedly stole women’s purses and checks from cars parked at day care centers. Police said they would later try to cash them at banks.
Austin police learned the trio was staying at a hotel in Austin and followed their movements through town. When the suspects went to a Chevron on Ben White Boulevard, officers in unmarked cars tried to block the suspects and arrest them at the gas station.
“The suspects in the vehicle saw our officers approaching at the time and they tried fleeing the scene and backed into an unmarked police car,” said Cpl. David Boyd, a spokesperson with APD.
Boyd said the suspects took off and crashed into an SUV a short time later near Ben White Boulevard and Woodward Street and the suspects’ car burst into flames.
Two women in the car were caught immediately, and a man was found in a nearby wooded area after he ran from the scene. Air support was called in to assist with the search.
Police have not released the suspects name and said the incident is still under investigation. APD said the suspects could possibly face charges for forgery, burglarizing a vehicle and possible aggravated assault.
