AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) – A local organization is seeking backpack donations for children who’ve been affected by domestic abuse. The Texas Advocacy Project provides free legal services to victims of domestic and sexual abuse across the state. On Monday, the non-profit launched The Backpacks for Hope campaign.

Through Friday, September 5th, residents can drop-off new backpacks at area locations like Allstate Agent Michael Walker’s office at 3810 Medical Pkwy., Ste. 155, Austin, Texas 78756

The goal is to collect 1,880 backpacks for 93 shelters across Texas.

“We do require them to be new backpacks. We’d also like as many school supplies– crayons, markers, paper, rulers, pencils– those type of basic things that everyone is going to need to get back into school,” said Heather Bellino, Executive Director of Texas Advocacy Project. “And quite frankly, we’re looking for more drop off locations.”

In addition to school supplies, each backpack will include a card with the hot-line number (1-800-374-HOPE) for the kids, and info about the legal services and other resources available for the parents. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
