NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (AP) — Authorities say a Texas trooper shot a man who was resisting arrest and reaching for the officer’s gun during a Central Texas traffic stop.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Jason Reyes says the unidentified man was pulled over early Saturday in Guadalupe County on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Reyes says the trooper tried to arrest the man after he failed a sobriety test but the man resisted.

Reyes says the trooper shot the man with a stun gun and was later forced to shoot him with his pistol after the man tried to grab the weapon.

The man was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he was in critical but stable condition.

Reyes says the trooper was not injured. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
