AUSTIN (KXAN) — Despite the triple digit heat Thursday, the City of Austin city council approved a measure that would allow a new entry fee for the Trail of Lights holiday attraction.

Under the proposed pricing system, visitors 13 and older on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights would have to pay a $3 fee to get into the park.

Weekday visits to the Zilker Park wonderland would not be subjected to the new $3 fee.

The idea to begin charging is part of a resolution proposed by Mayor Lee Leffingwell. He says more money is needed to cover security, clean up fees and staffing on weekends.

“Attendance on the weekdays is not so high,” he said, “but they’re really overcrowding Saturdays and Sundays.”

Thursday’s city council approval simply allows the Trail of Lights Foundation to charge the fee. The foundation has not said whether or not it will charge the entry fee this year.
