HOUSTON (AP) — A teenager has been charged with murder in the slaying of a 35-year-old man whose beaten and stabbed body was found in a Houston motel bathtub.

Harris County jail records show 17-year-old Carlos Mercado was being held Thursday without bond.

Online jail records don’t list an attorney for Mercado, who was arrested Tuesday driving the wrong way on a frontage road in the victim’s car. Investigators say Mercado had blood on his clothes, which led authorities to check on other recently reported crimes.

A motel worker earlier Tuesday reported discovering the victim’s body when going into a room for cleaning.

Houston police say Mercado and the victim, whose name wasn’t immediately released, checked into a room together and then apparently argued.

Authorities haven’t released a possible motive in the death.
