Tax-Free Weekend: Everything you need to know

back to school shopping

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Starting Friday, Texas shoppers are estimated to save nearly $83 million in state and local sales taxes on school supplies and clothing during the state’s annual sales tax holiday.

Items that cost less than $100 will be eligible for sales tax savings Friday through Sunday in the event geared toward back to school shoppers. Not all clothing and school supplies are covered, so shop carefully.

For example, computers and certain calculators are not covered by the sales tax exemptions. Additionally, athletic safety equipment is not tax-free even though a football jersey is exempt.

In the clothing department, it all boils down to whether or not you can wear a specific item for more than one purpose. Running shoes are tax-free because they can be worn every day for any type of activity. Golf shoes are not tax-free because they are generally not worn for anything other than a specific purpose, golf.
