Settlement could come this week for family of man killed by officer

AUSTIN (KXAN) — City Council is scheduled to discuss a possible payment on Thursday to the family of a man killed by an Austin police detective.

Larry Jackson Jr. was shot and killed by Det. Charles Kleinert in July 2013.

Kleinert chased Jackson after he tried to enter a bank during a robbery investigation. After catching Jackson, the two struggled and Kleinert shot Jackson.

The detective insisted it was an accident, but a grand jury indicted him on criminal charges.

“Nothing will ever bring back Mr. Jackson, but the financial loss is devastating,” said Bobby Taylor, the lawyer for Jackson’s three children. “I’m trying to settle this as quickly as possible so the kids can move on with their needs and future”

He added that he has been in talks for several months with the city attorney and will not accept anything less than $1 million.

“If we cannot resolve this on Thursday at or after the city council meeting, we will file our portion of the lawsuit and we’ll proceed to let the jury decide.”
