SANTA MONICA, Texas (AP) — Two suspects have been detained after an off-duty Border Patrol agent was fatally shot and another man wounded during a family fishing trip in South Texas.

The Willacy (WIL’-uh-see) County Sheriff’s Office says two men were in custody Monday. Details weren’t immediately released on the suspects in Sunday night’s shootings near Santa Monica during an attempted robbery.

Border Patrol spokesman Omar Zamora said the agent had a gun in a holster and the robbers apparently opened fire after noticing the weapon. KRGV-TV reports the agent’s relatives provided descriptions that helped officers locate the fleeing vehicle and catch the suspects on foot.

The name of the slain agent and further details on the wounded man weren’t immediately released.

Messages left with the sheriff’s office and Border Patrol weren’t immediately returned Monday.
