AUSTIN (KXAN) — Officials reconstructing a crash near Lady Bird Lake caused a major tie-up along MoPac on Monday.

The Texas Department of Transportation said Department of Public Safety workers were reconstructing a crash that the Travis County District Attorney’s Office is investigating.

A DPS spokesperson later said that the Austin Police Department was responsible for the shutdown. Earlier Monday, APD said they were not aware of the lane closures and later sent a tweet saying Travis County Constables were assisting with construction in the area, and deferred calls to that department.

But officials with the MoPac Improvement Project also tweeted to frustrated drivers ensuring them the backup was not due to the ongoing construction in the area.

Southbound traffic was backed up to Far West Boulevard for more than an hour. The roadway was reopened about 4 p.m., TxDOT said, but heavy delays remained along the highway. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
