Firefighters distribute smoke alarms in Southwest Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Firefighters went door-to-door in Southwest Austin Saturday, handing out smoke alarms to residents who live near a home that caught fire last week.

The firefighters checked neighbors’ smoke alarms and installed free ones in their homes. In addition to smoke alarms, they say having a plan to get out of your home is important.

“In the event that something happens at 2 in the morning, you want to know what you’re going to do which includes rolling out bed onto the floor and crawling,” AFD Lt. Robert Kimmons said. “You want to feel the door. If it’s hot, go out a window. And have a meeting place for the rest of your family.”

The duplex that burned last weekend had smoke alarms, and the four people inside were able to get out.
