AUSTIN (KXAN) –  UT Students are planning a living, interactive memorial of the 1966 tower shootings today.

Charles Whitman opened fire from the observation deck 48 years ago today, killing 16 people and wounding dozens more.

This morning at 11:30, a group called UT Students of the World gathered at the Littlefield Fountain and followed a meditative walk to areas where each victim died. The walk ended at the turtle pond behind the tower, where the memorial ended with a speaker and a moment of silence.
