SUNSET VALLEY (KXAN) – A man at a Party City in Sunset Valley was arrested Wednesday evening after allegedly trying to steal necklaces.

According to the arrest affidavit, at around 9 p.m., Phillip Medrano Vela entered the Party City located at 5601 Brodie Lane with a young man and headed towards the necklace section. Store employees and security said they watched Vela grab four party bead necklaces and try to leave after placing them inside a black purse he was carrying.

As soon as he was confronted by store security on his way out, police say Vela “became upset and started yelling, taking his clothes off and swinging his purse around the store.” After knocking down various displays of merchandise, Vela dashed to the front doors and was grabbed by two members of the store’s staff.

A scuffle ensued and a store manager ended up with a three-inch cut above his foot after being pushed by Vela into an unknown object, the document said.

Vela was arrested shortly after and is being charged with second degree robbery. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
