Trucker killed in I-35 crash identified

Michael Raymond Mitchell

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A truck driver was killed early Wednesday when his big rig crashed into the back of another 18-wheeler.

Police said a southbound truck that had been stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 35 pulled back into traffic and was in the process of getting back up to speed when it was hit.

Michael Raymond Mitchell, 51, died in the crash that happened about 3:30 a.m., just north of Braker Lane. Police said the impact and shifting loads caused the cab Mitchell was riding in to crumple.

The crash closed southbound lanes for about seven hours that morning, and police closed the lanes again about 9:30 p.m. for further investigation. The lanes reopened about two hours later.

This was Austin’s 29th deadly traffic crash and 36th fatality of 2014. At this time in 2013, there were 49 deadly crashes and 50 fatalities.
