AUSTIN (KXAN) — Some Central Texans spent part of their Sunday enjoying the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for free.

It’s part of a Tribute Day honoring Lady Bird, who was known as the “environmental first lady.”

At the center, people got to tour the garden and children got to enjoy an hour of story-time.

One couple says it was the perfect opportunity to bring their grandchildren out to enjoy the day.

“It’s important that they appreciate the world around them,” Jan Morrison said.

“And too many kids are sheltered in the house just being on the computer and on TV all day, you know,” her husband John added. “They don’t get exposed to this at all. They need to experience nature.”

The Wildflower Center says President Lyndon Johnson passed more than 200 environmental laws during his administration.
