WWII veteran gets flight of a lifetime

A 94-year old Marine veteran, who saw World War II on the ground and from the water, got the flight of a lifetime in San Marcos Saturday.

Clarence Heidemann served at Pearl Harbor before serving in China, Korea and Okinawa. He retired in 1961.

Clarence always wanted to see what it was like to be a flyboy in an open cockpit bi-plane and he got the chance Saturday. The vintage World War I plane flew from San Marcos over his family homestead of Uhland.

“I just always wanted to ride one like that,” Heidermann said. “The opportunity presented itself, I’m going to do it.”

He got his flight thanks to the Wish of a Lifetime, the Brookdale Senior Living Centers and the CAF Centex Wing. More than 600 seniors have had their wish granted since Brookdale and Wish of a Lifetime teamed up.
