AUSTIN (KXAN) – Thirteen men stranded on an island on the Colorado River, northeast of the intersection of SH-130 and SH-71 had to be rescued by Star Flight helicopter Friday morning.
The men were camping on the island as part of a canoe trip when they got caught in last night’s torrential rains. They told KXAN’s Chris Sadeghi everything was okay when they went to bed around 2 a.m. But, they awoke to flooding around 6 a.m. and their canoes and kayaks were nowhere to be found.
“When we woke up around 6 o’clock, water was rising, our canoes and kayaks were gone, our coolers, everything we had was pretty much was down the river,” said Eric Anderson, one of the stranded kayakers.
StarFlight was called in to help with the rescue and arrived within 20 minutes according to Anderson. The helicopter made multiple trips, landing on the island and then flying the men, three at a time, to a nearby field in the Chapparal Crossing neighborhood where they were all reunited and checked out with EMTs. From there they were put in ambulances, not for a trip to the hospital, but for a ride back to their vehicles at the kayak dock.
