Police stop man covered in gas from trying to light cigarette

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man covered in gasoline trying to light a cigarette was apprehended by police in downtown Austin on Tuesday.

The man was first seen pouring gasoline on vehicles and trying to set them on fire in a parking lot near 7th and Neches Streets about 10 a.m. Officers later found him near Waller Creek around 6th Street with the cigarette.

The officers were able to take the man into custody without incident and the Austin Fire Department has taken over the investigation. He was booked into the Travis County Jail on attempted arson charges.
