Community rallies behind zoo following burglary

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Zoo says they have received a huge outpouring of support days after thousands of dollars in cash and other items were stolen from the facility.

Early Friday morning, thieves broke into the gift shop and front office. They stole the ATM and broke into the cash register. The crooks also stole the surveillance cameras along with other electronics.

Zoo officials say a surveillance company will donate and install a new camera system Monday.

A locksmith donated his time over the weekend to rekey the buildings, said Zoo Director Patti Clark. He also installed a new safe.

The thieves got away with about $5,000 in cash and another $20,000 worth of electronics and other equipment, Clark said
