Man caught on camera stealing bikes from East Austin home

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police are hoping photos of a man seen stealing bicycles from a home in East Austin early Friday morning leads them to the culprit.

The theft happened around 3:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of Garden Street.

The homeowner, Jeff Paulsen believes the burglar broke through the side door to his garage and stole four of his bicycles, worth around $14,000.

“It’s a rude July 4th,” said Paulsen. “I was looking forward to my day off.”

Paulsen said all his bikes were cable-locked to each other.

With the help of a game camera that Paulsen mounted in his garage, police now have several images of the suspect in action.

While this incident happened on the eastside, detectives believe the suspect in this case could be connected to the rash of bicycle thefts in the Allandale neighborhood.

“If this incident would lead to the cessation of that [high-end bicycle thefts], that would be wonderful, it’d be some good news,” said Paulsen.

The suspect is described as:

  • White or Hispanic
  • 25-35 years of age
  • Medium build

If anyone has information about the suspect or this incident, please call Burglary Detective McGuire at (512) 974-5227 or the Burglary Unit Detectives at (512) 974-6941.
