Surfers paddle dangerously close to whale

SYDNEY (NBC/RTV) — Surfers in Australia got an unexpected treat over the weekend that was caught on tape.

Surfers off a Sydney beach came extremely close to a southern right whale on Sunday.

A photographer in a helicopter caught the get-together and showed one surfer quickly swimming away when the whale flicked its tail.

One boy who was surfing at the time said the whale looked huge up close.

“I was paddling out there, and then I saw it,” he said. “It was pretty big.”

The surfers appeared to be closer than authorities allow, but they left before members of the Wildlife Service arrived.

Australia’s Department of Environment and Heritage said the whale may have been pregnant. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
