Comment about girlfriend may have led to murder

LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) — A comment made about a man’s girlfriend may have led to murder near Leander over the weekend.

According to an arrest warrant, Cecil Kite Jr., 33, admitted to stabbing 42-year-old John Dodson in the chest on Saturday after Dodson told him he had sex with Kite’s girlfriend. Both men were inside a travel trailer at the time of the incident.

Deputies say Kite appeared under the influence of something when they responded to the scene.

Dodson was somewhat of a drifter in the Sandy Creek neighborhood of Northwest Travis County, according to friend Lisa Drake.

“He might have rubbed some the wrong way, but for the most part, he was a great guy,” said Drake. “He had a distinctive laugh and I do not think anyone out here will forget him whether they liked him or not.”

Friends at Calkins Country Store fondly remembered Dodson as “Hyena Johnny” and the arrest warrant also refers to him as “Laughing Johnny.”

Drake told KXAN the community plans on collecting donations to help Dodson’s family pay for a proper burial.
