AUSTIN (KXAN) – The suspected driver of a SUV that crashed into a North Austin apartment complex Monday morning has been charged with public intoxication, Austin Police said.

The crash happened at about 6:30 a.m. at 1652 Rutland Drive, near Mountain Quail Road.

Austin Police say witnesses at a bus stop across the street reported seeing the SUV swerving as it traveled eastbound on Rutland.  The driver appeared to over-correct, realizing it was headed for the bus stop, only to mow down a metal gate and hit the building.

The vehicle went through the wall of a closet in an occupied unit. No one was hurt.

Investigators say the driver got out via the passenger side door and ran. They did not find any blood in the car to indicate the driver was seriously injured.

APD knocked on the door of the residence where the vehicle’s owner lives, but got no response.

The SUV has been removed from the building and Austin police officers continue to investigate.
