NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (KXAN) — A 23-year-old Marine from New Braunfels died in combat Wednesday in the Helmand province of Afghanistan.
Sgt. Thomas Z. Spitzer was a mortarman with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based out of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California.
Spitzer enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 2009.
This was Spitzer’s second deployment during Operation Enduring Freedom.
His personal and service awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan.
A public memorial service for Spitzer will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2 at Canyon High School’s Cougar Stadium.
His body arrives at New Braunfels Airport at 2:30 p.m. on July 4.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 6 from 2-7 p.m. at Zoeller Funeral Home in New Braunfels.
The funeral will be on Monday, July 7 at 12 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in New Braunfels. Internment will follow at Fort Sam Houston.
