Two children killed in Southeast Austin truck rollover

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Two children were killed after the truck they were riding in overturned Thursday south of the airport.

The crash happened at the intersection of FM 812 and FM 973 about 1 p.m.

Police say 27-year-old Criselda Ambriz swerved to avoid a utility truck that had stopped in the road to pick up transformer that had fallen off the back and spilled oil on the roadway. Ambriz lost control of her truck after hitting the oil and crashed.

Jocelyn Nereyda Medina-Reyes, 7, and 5-year-old Joel Reyes died in the crash. The two were not wearing seat belts.

Police said a 5-year-old and 13-year-old were taken to Dell Children’s Medical Center. Meanwhile, Ambriz was treated and released from University Medical Center Brackenridge.

EMS officials say their injuries were not life-threatening.

Texas Department of Transportation statistics show there have been 36 crashes at that intersection since 2009, including two deaths.
