AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin City Council could soon require homeowners to get a permit to build some treehouses.

“Instead of the current process, we’re asking for a simplified process to allow people to build treehouses,” said a spokeswoman for Councilman Chris Riley’s office.

Councilman Chris Riley is sponsoring the measure, saying he’d like to make it easier for people to build and have treehouses.

Council members passed a resolution Thursday that would start a permitting process for treehouses and other structures found in the public right of way, or the part of your yard along sidewalks and roads that you do not own. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
