AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin City Council will consider a resolution Thursday supporting medical marijuana in Texas. However, it would not have any legal impact.

But Council members Bill Spelman and Mike Martinez want to show support for legislation that would provide a legal defense for Texas patients who are using medical marijuana.

Earlier this year, The Marijuana Policy set up shop in Austin in an effort to legalize marijuana in Texas.

The group helped to pass Colorado’s recreational laws, and now they’re hoping to do the same in Texas. They hope to pass measures through the legislature in 2015 and 2017 and have legalization achieved in 2019. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
