AUSTIN (KXAN) — A 38-year-old Georgetown man is in the Travis County Jail facing a murder charge following last week’s death of a 57-year-old woman on Staton Drive.
Miles Madison McCartney was booked into jail early Tuesday morning, just hours after police announced he was a suspect in Shirley Felter’s death.
Officers were investigating Felter’s death in the 12800 block of Staton Drive last Thursday; they later announced they believed her death was a homicide.
McCartney was in a hurry to leave and get to the hospital, according to the arrest affidavit. Officers called EMS to the scene to evaluate him. Medics cleared him and he was allowed to leave once someone showed up who could care for the children in the house. Police said they briefly exchanged words before he left the area.
Police then found her dead inside of a locked bathroom.
The victim’s daughter was taken in for questioning. According to the arrest affidavit, in their brief exchange, McCartney told the woman that her mother was in the bathroom and that he was sorry.
During their interview with the victim’s daughter, police learned she and her mother had been fighting over whether or not Felter would let McCartney use her vehicle. The daughter told investigators she locked locked herself and her children in a bedroom and went to sleep.
Officers finally caught back up with McCartney after he confessed to a friend, according to the document.
He was taken into custody and booked into the Travis County Jail where he is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond.
