Hundreds of pets still unclaimed at shelter after storms

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Austin Animal Center appears to be full of pets spooked by the storms in Central Texas last week.

The agency says it took in more than 400 animals in the last 7 days, but only 132 have left the shelter.

“It never ceases to amaze me,” says Abigail Smith, Chief Animal Services Officer, “that so many healthy, well cared for pets arrive here and are never reclaimed. They are well groomed, and they have nice collars, but no id tag or microchip.”

The animal center is turning to social media to help get the animals home. They posted photos of the pets on their Facebook page and tweet every 30 minutes about strays that came into the shelter.
