AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin-Travis County EMS Captain was mistakenly overpaid $12,000 for the past eight months, according to ATCEMS Chief of Staff James Shamad.

The City employee was promoted to captain in November 2013, but continued to work 48 hours a week, even though captain’s usually only work 40 hours a week.

According to Shamad, the payroll system didn’t catch the mistake so the employee was continuing to get paid an extra eight hours every week — at a higher pay rate — for the past eight months.

Last month, KXAN News reported on how one employee was overpaid by $200,000.

The City’s payroll department noticed the recent anomaly after doing a monthly check of the system. The recent check also revealed that another employee was being underpaid by $4,000.

The captain will have to pay back the $12,000.
