Carjacking, kidnapping in Austin connected to Bastrop bank robbery

BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) — A bank robbery that happened in Bastrop on Wednesday morning is connected to a carjacking and kidnapping in Austin.

According to the Austin Police Department, a suspect approached a person in a parking lot and proceeded to steal the driver’s car and kidnap the driver.

After taking money from the victim, the suspect released the uninjured victim at an undisclosed location.

A short time later, the Austin Telco Federal Credit Union in Bastrop was robbed. The suspect was seen leaving the scene in a black SUV headed eastbound on TX 71, according to the Bastrop Police Department.

Bastrop police found the abandoned SUV in a nearby apartment complex and were able to track the suspect back to a neighborhood in eastern Travis County.

A spokesperson for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to assist with the investigation around 12:30 p.m at a home in the 15100 block of Sabal Palm Road.

Authorities were able to identify the person inside the home and he was arrested without incident. He is currently being held in the Travis County Jail.
