LAKEWAY, Texas (KXAN) — UPS issued an apology on Monday after a family said a delivery driver slashed their dogs faces with a box cutter when delivering a package to their Lakeway home this weekend.
The dog owners were not home and got an alarming call from a neighbor.
“My neighbor called and said you need to get home immediately,” said Laura Crowell, who was at the lake Friday evening with her husband and son. The dogs were at home alone.
Her husband left first and she arrived shortly after.
“All I saw was blood and all I saw was him,” Crowell said pointing to her Great Dane. “My husband had taken (the other dog) to Westgate vet.”
The family says they have an invisible fence surrounding their property that allows their dogs to run to the front yard. Signs posted around the home also indicate an invisible fence is in place.
The neighbor told the Crowells a UPS driver said he was delivering a package to their door and had ‘cut’ two dogs.
Blood could be seen spattered down the driveway and in the dirt.
“He required over 50 stitches in his face and in his mouth,” Crowell said of one of the dogs. “And our Great Dane required staples. He got our Great Dane right under the eye, barely missing his left eye.”
Crowell reported the incident to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, and they sent a deputy out.
“I just think it was extremely excessive force, and, it’s not okay,” Crowell added.
In a statement, UPS said they “do not condone the carrying of knives or any other defensive device…We will speak with our driver and the customer and take appropriate action once all the facts are known.”
Crowell says the dogs have not been aggressive before, and wonders how the situation got out of control.
“This heinous act will not leave my mind.”
UPS also told us that drivers are trained in handling these situations.
Officials with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office say they have assigned a detective to the case.
