TEMPLE, Texas (KXAN/AP) — The driver of an 18-wheeler was killed after his truck collided with an Amtrak train in Temple that was carrying about 170 passengers.

Police Cpl. Christopher Wilcox says the collision occurred shortly after 11 a.m. Monday at Avenue K and 12th Street, near downtown Temple. He says the 18-wheeler driven by 58-year-old Randall Collier of Rogers crossed the tracks ahead of the train and was struck on the front passenger side.

Collier died at the scene. None of the train’s passengers or crew was injured. It’s not clear how fast the northbound train was traveling.

Wilcox says the intersection does not have crossing gates but witnesses reported hearing the train’s warning horn as it approached.

The train was traveling north to Fort Worth with a final destination of Chicago.

It continued on its route after undergoing an inspection. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
