Austin (KXAN)- When a loved one is diagnosed with a serious illness, doctors treat the condition, but what about how the patient feels and what the family is experiencing?
That’s where palliative care comes into play. The purpose is to alleviate or prevent suffering for patients with serious illness and assist family members and loved ones.
It’s a relatively new specialty being offered by Seton Healthcare currently. It has been in use there since 2006.
Doctors and nurses perform three tasks: 1) manage symptoms such as pain, sleep problems, and anything else patients feel as a result of their illness 2) act like the communication and education team in the patients care by conducting time intensive family meetings and 3) help the family or loved ones that surround the patient through their experience as well.
