AUSTIN (KXAN) — Many Austin parents are shocked that an AISD teacher admitted to sexually assaulting a 6-year-old student. Neighbors of the suspect, Alfredo Andrade-Gaytan, are in disbelief.
For Austin father Robert Escamilla, protecting his two young children is his job.
“He’s pretty much in his terrible two’s, still. My wife says they are going to be getting into trouble together!” said Escamilla.
He says he couldn’t imagine his children getting hurt like that.
“I know that it can happen anywhere. It can happen right next door. It can happen in the blink of an eye.”
Several neighbors of Andrade-Gaytan say they are still trying to make sense of it all.
“I’m pretty much disgusted to know this guy lives three houses down from me,” said Michael Collins.
“I was in disbelief,” said Miranda, another neighbor. “I felt like they had the wrong person or they were confused with someone else.”
They describe Andrade-Gaytan as a nice, average man. They say he’s a father of two young children.
“You never know who lives next door to you,” said Collins. “I truly feel that once a predator always a predator, if it’s their first time it won’t be their last time.”
On their minds now, is the young girl.
“I just want to say I’m so proud of the little girl who was brave to step forward. I think parents should have a lot of conversations with their children about sexual predators. And that they can be a neighbor, or a school teacher, or a police officer. That it can be anybody,” said Miranda.
Escamilla said, “I pray the family can get through this, and can cope.”
