LLANO, Texas (KXAN) – A Llano County justice of the peace won the Republican nomination for Precinct 2 after a coin toss on Thursday.

After a runoff, incumbent Linda Ballard and Steve Lange were tied at 371 votes each.

A recount was completed on Monday and the coin flip was used to break the tie. Ballard won the toss.

State law calls for casting lots, or flipping a coin in this instance, if a runoff election is tied.

Casting of lots goes back to Roman times and is referenced in the Bible.
