AUSTIN (KXAN) – Third Street will be reduced to one west-bound lane of traffic Thursday between Guadalupe and Lavaca streets as construction begins on the third phase of the Third Street Reconstruction Project.

The project will also mean that Guadalupe and Lavaca streets will be alternately reduced to two lanes of traffic as the intersections with Third Street are reconstructed.

The Third Street construction will begin on the south side of the street and is expected to last about 10 weeks. Crews will then work on the north side of the street. Overall, the construction is expected to be done by the end of November.

The city’s contractor will receive a bonus if work is completed early. However, the city says previous projects in this area have taken three to six months longer than their original expected completion. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
