MARBLE FALLS, Texas (KXAN) – A man who until yesterday was a volunteer firefighter for Marble Falls and employee at Marble Falls ISD has been arrested by Texas Rangers.
Jail records show Deavon DeLancey, 30, faces charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child and possession of child pornography. He was arrested on Thursday night and booked into the Burnet County Jail where he is being held in lieu of $1,100,000 bond.
DeLancey was a firefighter with an EMT certification for the Marble Falls Fire Area Volunteer Department. Chief Michael Phillips tells KXAN DeLancey was removed from the fire department when they learned of his arrest.
Marble Falls ISD tells KXAN DeLancey was employed with the district’s IT department.
Lara Clayton, a Marble Falls parent said, “Being a student, you really put a lot of faith into the people that are around you. It’s really sad to see, especially the day before graduation, these kids are going out with that idea of a shattered faith.”
According to the Department of Public Safety (who oversees the Texas Rangers), the Texas Rangers started investigating the case a few months ago after they were asked to look into it by the Cottonwood Shores Police Department.
In an email letter to parents, Marble Falls ISD says Texas Rangers were investigating allegations that an employee had taken “inappropriate videos and/or photos of Marble Falls ISD students in District bathrooms and dressing facilities.”
One Marble Falls parent, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “The opening line was heart-wrenching itself. You’re going through and it’s talking about the sexual abuse of a child and child pornography.”
The letter continued, “This individual will no longer be an employee of the District.”
The district’s letter did not specifically name DeLancey but told parents they would be contacted if their student appeared on any of the images.
“Everyone is really disgusted because he had access to every single school in the ISD,” said the parent.
“Background checks, more thoroughly for one, there had to be some kind of indication before that this was the type of behavior,” said Clayton.
“A lot of people that I know knew him and went to school with him, he went to school here. And they were completely blown away,” the parent said.
District officials checked all campuses and facilities Friday and did not locate any inappropriate devices.
MFISD LETTER TO PARENTS:
Late Thursday evening, June 5, Marble Falls ISD was contacted by the AG’s office, working in collaboration with the Texas Rangers, in regards to an ongoing investigation of an MFISD employee. The AG’s office stated that one of our employees had been arrested and charged with child pornography and aggravated sexual assault. The District is fully cooperating and assisting with the AG’s office and the TX Ranger’s investigation. This individual will no longer be an employee of the District.
A component of the investigation is that the employee had taken inappropriate videos and/or pictures of MFISD students in district bathrooms and dressing facilities. Throughout the evening, law enforcement officers and district officials conducted a thorough search of all district campuses and facilities to insure that no inappropriate devices were in place. No devices were found on-site. Having not found any inappropriate devices and knowing that the individual has been arrested, the District felt confident that all District facilities were safe for our students and staff.
MFISD will be in constant contact with the law enforcement agency as we continue to investigate this incident. If a student’s image was captured on an inappropriate video or picture, the parents of those students will be contacted. Currently, all evidence is with the appropriate law enforcement agency. They will need some time to sort through the evidence, but as we gain additional information, we will keep the appropriate parties informed.
If you have any evidence that you believe is relevant to this case, please contact the MFPD. Additionally, officials at the School District Central Office are available to answer questions. If you have specific questions or concerns related to this topic, please call 830-693-4357 and you will be directed to the appropriate person.
The unfortunate action of any one individual is not a reflection of this great community. This community and the staff of MFISD care passionately about our children. MFISD will continually strive to provide a safe learning environment for our students.
