Inmate dies in jail hours after he was arrested

LA GRANGE, Texas (KXAN) — A 22-year-old man died in the Fayette County Jail on Wednesday after being arrested earlier in the day.

Chad Allen Fieweger, of Florence, Arizona, was taken into custody after the 18-wheeler he was driving crashed along Interstate 10 in Fayette County. He was taken to Columbus Hospital where doctors examined him and cleared him for release, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said.

Fieweger was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

Medics were called to the Fayette County Jail about 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Fieweger was not breathing. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

An autopsy was ordered and an investigation involving the Texas Rangers is underway. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
