AUSTIN (KXAN) – The man who Austin Police say befriended a teen in Hyde Park before sexually assaulting him on a hike and bike trail near Lady Bird Lake late last month has been arrested.
The teen told police it was about 10:30 p.m when he was walking from his dad’s apartment to his mother’s home, down Guadalupe Street, when the man introduced himself. The teen said he recognized the man as someone who was at Walgreens where he stopped to get water. The man continued walking with the teen to Guadalupe and 1st Street when the man asked the boy to take the hike and bike path.
According to the probable cause affidavit, that’s when the suspect sexually assaulted the boy.
Police say the boy told his mother about the event as soon as he got home.
Officers watched security camera footage from both Walgreens and 7 Eleven where both the victim and the suspect were seen entering and leaving the store. Detectives distributed the suspect’s picture to other officers, one of whom identified the suspect as 35-year-old Michael Bergeron, one of his former co-workers at a fast food restaurant.
Austin police said they do not believe there are any more victims involved.
According to the affidavit, the the victim identified Bergeron as suspect in a photo line up.
Bergeron was arrested Wednesday. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond.
