AUSTIN (KXAN) — The annual Fourth of July fireworks display will not be hosted at Auditorium Shores this year, according to the Austin Symphony Orchestra.

The concert and fireworks display, traditionally held at Auditorium Shores, will be hosted at the Austin360 Amphitheater at the Circuit of the Americas this year since the park is under renovation. According to a statement released by the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the move is planned only for this year, and next year the event will return to Auditorium Shores.

“I was kind of surprised to be honest with you,” said Mike Pearce, owner of Lone Star Riverboat. “You know we’ve been doing it 28 years now, I have. And it’s never happened before where all of a sudden the fireworks weren’t going to be at Auditorium shores.”

Mike’s surprised because he’s been selling tickets to a dinner cruise that now won’t come with fireworks overhead.

“We looked at trying to keep it at Zilker, but again, we wanted to give the Bouldin Creek neighborhood a break because of all the festivals that they have to go through each year,” said Don Hill, a spokesperson for the Austin Symphony Orchestra. “Since it is a party for the citizens of Austin, we wanted to take that into account. Plus the added expense of having to do a shuttle service like we’ve done in the past — when the Long Center was being built we moved it to Zilker — and the symphony just could not bear that expense.”

Don says you’ll be able to use concessions, bring a cooler, tailgate, or camp this year too.

“We’re going to have to readjust basically and offer people refunds, ” said Mike Pearce. “And we’re going to still go out, we’re going to do a dinner cruise. It’s open to the public, which we normally don’t have available.”

Don says the Austin Symphony plans to move the event back downtown in the future.

COTA will host a variety of activities on July 4 to celebrate Independence Day including interactive games and contests starting at 6 p.m. The orchestra will perform at 8:30 p.m. followed by the fireworks at approximately 9:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The event will be simulcast on Majic 95.5 FM

The HEB Austin Symphony Concert and Fireworks is planned, produced and performed entirely by the Austin Symphony Orchestra.
