Smash-and-grab thieves hit Austin daycares

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Police are investigating car break-ins at daycares in South Austin.

The crooks hit at least three daycares in the area near William Cannon Drive and MoPac over the past few weeks.

The owner at Kids Campus on McArty Lane said four cars were broken into on the same morning during drop-off time. One was an employee’s car and the other three cars belonged to parents.

The thieves broke two of the cars windows to steal belongings. The other two cars were left unlocked.

“It’s so frustrating, and it breaks you down, because you feel like you do everything you can to ensure the safety of all the children and parents and staff,” said Debbie Parker. “And when something like this happens, it puts you on a heightened awareness.”

Parker says police detectives tell her they’re working to get surveillance from nearby banks, where stolen cards might have been used. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
